Nottinghams Traditional pubs

The traditional English pub was known as the heart of the community in village's towns and cities all over England. The term 'pub' came from the Victorians, it's an abbreviation of 'public house'. Due to changes in pub law the traditional pub is disappearing but one thing that has remained is people's fondness to drinking.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem on Castle Road claims to be the oldest Inn in England dated from 1189AD. This was the original brew house for the castle the pub looks very small from the outside but that's deceiving you will be amazed with all the alcoves of rooms which are actually built in beneath the castle in sandstone caves. There are a number of interesting features within each of the rooms providing a unique atmosphere. Two other pubs also claim to be one of the oldest in Nottingham, The Salutation Inn on Houndsgate and The Bell Inn on Angel Row both giving a date of around 1420.

The Bell Inn was a men only pub until 1969 serving real ale and local brews and traditional pub food. It does have a feel of an old pub. Local bands perform most evenings providing a variety of live rock or Jazz music to entertain you.

Ye Olde Salution Inn, built in 1240 is also known for its story of the haunted caverns beneath the Inn. A five year old girl ghost Rosie roams there, although we question whether this rumour began due to the amount of beer has been drank there!

The Fellow Morton & Clayton is one of Nottingham's few remaining pubs that brew their own bitter on the premises. One of the beers has a strawberry after taste! They offer exceptional value and quality food should you get hungry.
